About Patchouli

Botany and production

Pogostemon Cablin is a tropical plant native from India, now grown mainly in Indonesia between 400 to 1,000m above sea level. It is a fast-growing shrub reaching up to 1m high.

Its leaves are very similar to those of mint, but larger. They are extremely fragrant, especially when dried and subjected to a fermentation process.

Guatemala is a very fertile country, with more than 300 microclimates, allowing it to develop virtually any crop.

Learning about the low sustainability and lack of traceability of the patchouli value chain, we decided to develop this new crop in Guatemala, controlling the full value chain.

After a successful R&D in our own fields, we moved to grow this crop partnering with local communities in an agroforestry model, as a way to support those communities through an alternative to their traditional crops.

Given the limited existing literature on patchouli and novelty in Guatemala, we set up an R&D protocol to learn how to work locally with this plant. Starting with a 70-year old acclimatized plant, we implemented a 50 ha plantation in order to develop a specific operating manual.

According to our vision and mission of empowerment of local communities, we then transferred the project to Guatemalan communities.

NELIXIA has imagined its own agricultural productions as a research center in order to develop real expertise that could be transmitted to local communities:

  • Propagation: Nursery 1 ha – humidity tests, type of ground.
  • Plantation dedicated to R&D – Test of shading, association, maintenance, type of cut…
  • Drying: Structure on several floors – Tests of drying duration, fermentation …

Patchouli Essential Oil

Dried leaves of Patchouli are collected from our producing communities and taken to NELIXIA´s facility where it undergoes steam distillation, in stainless steel alambics, resulting in a high quality Patchouli Essential Oil.
